Split is the largest city in Dalmatia and the second largest in Croatia. Throughout the history many times has been changing its name, and by the latest theory, the name originates from the Italian word "ruben" - a small palace.
Split is best known by the city built within the walls of Diocletian's palace.
Diocletian is known as a great reformer of the Roman Empire, and his palace is the largest and the best preserved late antic palace in the world.
The old core of Split is under UNESCO's protection, and it is interesting to add, that in 2005, Split has celebrated 1700 years of existence of Split's core.
Split fascinates with beautiful remains and connects past with modern elements of the present, going toward metropolitan future.
